Students

The Entrepreneurial Management Center's vision is to create a seamless transition between entrepreneurial education and practice that enhances students' success in their careers and new venture startups. The EMC is dedicated to producing graduates who can add immediate value to emerging growth companies, particularly those in Southern California. SDSU's program in entrepreneurship is recognized as a successful "test-bed" for blending experiences into academic frameworks.

Programs that support and serve the entrepreneurial sector are essential to train future business leaders who can contribute to sustained regional economic development. San Diego is a hub for entrepreneurship, and there is a natural synergy between the Entrepreneurial Management Center and the region's dynamic business environment.

Since 1996, over 900 MS/MBA students have benefited from programs sponsored by the EMC as part of their experiential learning in completing a Masters degree in business administration. Graduates of SDSU's program in Entrepreneurship are results-oriented individuals who apply their diverse skills to add value for employers in a variety of industries and not-for-profit organizations. These include telecommunications, software, wireless, bio-technology, financial and other professional services.

Lavin VentureStart Program

The Lavin VentureStart Program is an exciting new EMC program launched in 2008 that realizes the entrepreneurial potential of SDSU undergraduate students. Aspiring entrepreneurs will receive coaching from expert business leaders, and be matched with resources for growing their prospective (or current) venture. An exclusive cohort of upper division students from a range of majors will be selected for fall 2008 to participate as "Lavin Fellows" and will receive a stipend of $2,500 per academic year. These students will have demonstrated exceptional entrepreneurial potential, leadership skills, and academic performance.

The Lavin VentureStart Program was formed through a generous gift bestowed by Leonard Lavin, founder and chairman emeritus of Alberto Culver Corp. ($1.5 billion Fortune 500 company). Mr. Lavin is enthusiastic to begin sharing his entrepreneurial wisdom with the new Lavin Fellows. "I am thrilled to leverage my background to nurture entrepreneurial leaders," Lavin said. "By supporting programs that offer feedback, insight, and mentoring to aspiring business leaders, I can give fledgling ventures the best possible chance of success."

Study Paths

Successful entrepreneurs are adaptable, flexible and eager to explore. The EMC's unique approach to learning is designed to foster such qualities in students. Coursework, activities and other learning initiatives are designed around four "clusters" of study that map to regional and national areas of entrepreneurial excellence. Clusters include:

These areas of interest are designed to give students study paths that link their personal interests with classroom, extracurricular, internship and consulting choices. At the same time, clear career paths in entrepreneurship are provided. This way, students experience an interdisciplinary approach to entrepreneurship and also have the option to specialize their area of study.
